Private healthcare in Sweden: questions to ask before booking
Updated
The word “private” does not tell you everything about a Swedish healthcare appointment. The provider may work under a regional agreement, charge you directly, or accept payment through an insurance policy. Establish which arrangement applies to the particular appointment before you book.
This guide helps you prepare a conversation with a clinic. It does not recommend a provider or establish whether a particular investigation or treatment is suitable for you.
Start with the problem you want help with
Write down the main reason you are seeking care, when it started and how it affects daily life. Tell the clinic whether you want a first assessment, follow-up of an existing condition or an explanation of an earlier result. Ask whether its clinicians handle that problem and what information they need before accepting a booking.
An appointment advertised as a consultation, screening package or scan can involve different services. Ask what you will actually receive. For example, does a scan booking include a clinician deciding whether the test is appropriate and a later discussion of the result?
Clarify payment before agreeing to care
1177 distinguishes between private providers with regional agreements and fully private care. Ask the clinic which arrangement covers your visit and request a written estimate. Do not assume that the same payment terms apply to every service at one clinic.
Useful questions include:
- What is included in the consultation fee?
- Are sampling, imaging, procedures or follow-up charged separately?
- What are the cancellation and rescheduling terms?
- If you use insurance, must the insurer authorise or arrange the appointment first?
- Who can answer a question about the bill?
A website's package description is not a personal care plan. Compare what the service includes, rather than comparing headline prices alone.
Check communication and continuity
Tell the clinic that you would like the appointment in English and ask what language support is available. If you have previous reports, ask how to share them securely. Avoid sending medical records to a general enquiry address without checking its intended use.
Before the consultation ends, ask who will explain any results, when you should expect contact and how to follow up if no message arrives. If another service is involved, ask who is responsible for the next step. Keep a copy of the information you receive and note any questions that remain unanswered.
When you need advice sooner
For healthcare advice in Sweden, contact 1177. In a life-threatening emergency, call 112. A routine private booking or website enquiry is not an emergency contact channel.
General information only. Access, fees and the appropriate next step depend on your circumstances and the provider's arrangements.
