Private healthcare insurance in Sweden: questions about cover
Updated
Before booking care through private healthcare insurance, check the actual policy and the insurer's booking procedure. The name of an insurance product does not establish whether a particular consultation, scan or treatment will be paid for.
The Swedish term sjukvårdsförsäkring generally refers to insurance connected with healthcare costs and access. Konsumenternas distinguishes it from sjukförsäkring, which concerns financial support when illness reduces the ability to work. Similar-looking words can therefore refer to different products.
Begin with the policy you have
Find out whether the policy is held individually, through an employer or through another group arrangement. Keep the current policy terms and contact information available. Ask the insurer how to open a case and whether it must authorise or arrange care before you book.
Do not assume that paying a clinic yourself will automatically lead to reimbursement. Ask the insurer to explain the process for your circumstances and keep its response with the booking information.
Ask specific questions
A useful enquiry describes the service under consideration without presuming it is covered. You might ask:
- Does my current policy cover an assessment of this problem?
- Must I use a named provider or a clinic in a particular network?
- Is a referral or prior authorisation required?
- Does the decision include tests and follow-up, or only the first visit?
- Are there exclusions, waiting periods, excess payments or limits that apply?
- What happens if the clinician recommends a different service?
If an answer is unclear, ask for the relevant policy section and written clarification. A general sales page cannot settle an individual coverage decision.
Keep clinical decisions and payment decisions clear
An insurer's payment decision and a clinician's assessment answer different questions. Insurance approval does not by itself establish that a test is suitable, and a recommendation for care does not by itself establish insurance cover.
Ask the clinician what a proposed investigation is intended to clarify. Ask the insurer separately whether the policy will pay for it and what arrangements are required. This is particularly useful when one appointment leads to a suggestion for further care.
If you are comparing policies
Use current terms rather than an old summary. Ask what happens when employment ends, at retirement or when renewing the policy. Consider how the conditions apply to your needs instead of comparing only a monthly premium or a promise in an advertisement.
