Your first physiotherapy appointment in Sweden

Updated

A first physiotherapy appointment is an opportunity to describe what is difficult, have the problem assessed and agree on realistic next steps. You do not need to arrive with your own diagnosis or a request for a particular scan. Bring the questions and practical goals that matter to you, whether that means returning to work, walking more comfortably or resuming sport.

What may happen during the assessment

The physiotherapist will usually ask about your symptoms, health and daily activities before examining movement and function. Depending on the problem, this can involve checking how you move, your strength or your balance. The findings help shape an individual treatment plan. 1177 describes physiotherapy and how an assessment works.

Explain when the problem began, whether there was an injury and what makes it better or worse. Mention earlier treatment and relevant illnesses or operations. A short note about tasks you cannot currently manage can be more helpful than trying to remember everything during the visit.

Make the goals specific

Instead of only saying that you want less pain, describe an activity you want to recover. Examples include climbing the stairs at home, sitting through a meeting or returning to a particular training session. Ask which changes would count as progress and when you should review them together.

If exercises are suggested, ask to practise them during the appointment. Make sure you understand the starting amount, frequency and progression. Ask what response is expected and what should make you stop and seek advice. A general online exercise list cannot answer those questions for every individual.

When another assessment may be needed

Ask whether the findings can be managed within physiotherapy or whether you need assessment by another professional. If imaging or another test is being discussed, ask what question it would answer. Agree on who will arrange the next step and who will explain the result. An assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis at the first visit or make MRI a routine requirement.

Useful questions include:

Booking and practical arrangements

1177 states that you can contact a physiotherapist directly to book. Check the actual clinic's booking arrangements, fees and whether the service is region-funded or fully private. Ask about English-language communication and any accessibility needs before attending. Follow the region selector on 1177 for information relevant to where you live.

At the end of the appointment, confirm your plan in your own words and ask for clarification where needed. This guide is general preparation information; your assessment and treatment should be adapted to your situation.
