Healthcare in Sweden after 70: planning appointments and follow-up

Updated

When several appointments, medicines or care teams are involved, keeping the plan understandable can matter as much as booking the next visit. This guide offers practical questions for older adults and anyone helping them prepare for care in Sweden. Turning 70 should not be treated as a universal rule about what a clinic charges or an insurance policy covers.

Put your priorities first

Before a visit, write down the changes you want to discuss and the everyday activities they affect. Choose the questions you most want answered. Bring an up-to-date account of the medicines and other products you take, including recent changes, and mention difficulties following an existing plan.

Tell the clinic in advance if you need help with hearing, communication, mobility or reaching the appointment. Ask what arrangements are available rather than assuming that a home visit, video visit or transport service is included. If you want a relative or supporter involved, say how you would like them to help.

Ask who coordinates your care

1177 describes a fixed care contact, or fast vårdkontakt, who can help coordinate visits and communication between services. A fixed doctor contact at your healthcare centre is another form of continuity. If coordination is difficult, discuss these options with the clinic. 1177 explains the different roles and how to request them.

Useful questions are:

Check fees and insurance separately

For any proposed appointment, ask the clinic what you will pay and whether an age-related exemption or public high-cost protection applies to that service. A fully private service and region-funded care can have different payment arrangements. Use the clinic and region's current information instead of an assumed fee based only on age.

If you have private insurance, ask the insurer to confirm that the policy is still in force and that the proposed visit is covered. Check limits, exclusions, any required approval and what happens after retirement or a change of employer. Konsumenternas explains why insurance age limits and conditions need checking.

Leave with a usable next step

Ask for instructions in a form you can use at home. Confirm any medicine instructions with the responsible clinician; do not change treatment based on this article. Write down which appointment is next, who books it and what should prompt earlier contact. If language is a barrier, request support when booking.

This is general information about preparing and coordinating care, not an assessment of an individual's health, treatment needs or insurance entitlement.
