Seeing a doctor in English in Sweden

Updated

Clear communication matters throughout a healthcare appointment: when you describe symptoms, discuss choices and agree on the next step. If you would like to use English, tell the clinic when booking and ask what it can arrange. Do not assume that an English website guarantees an English-speaking clinician for every appointment.

This guide offers practical preparation questions. It does not list verified clinics or promise appointment availability.

Explain your language needs early

Ask whether the consultation can be held in English and whether written instructions or a results discussion can also be provided in a language you understand. If English is not your strongest language, say which language you prefer.

1177 explains that language interpretation can be arranged for healthcare contacts and that you do not pay for the interpreter. Tell the service about the need when you make the appointment. Interpretation may be provided in person, by telephone or by video. Ask the clinic how it will work for your visit.

A relative may help you prepare your questions, but a professional interpreter has a different role. Discuss interpretation with the clinic instead of relying on someone accompanying you to translate complex medical information.

Prepare a short description

You do not need specialist vocabulary to explain a problem. Write a short account in your own words: where it is, when it began, what has changed and how it affects you. Include what you most want help understanding.

If an earlier report uses terms you do not understand, bring the report or ask how to share it securely. Avoid translating an unfamiliar medical word by guessing. It is reasonable to ask the clinician to explain the term in ordinary language.

Helpful phrases for the appointment include:

Confirm what you have understood

Before leaving, describe the plan back in your own words and ask whether you have understood it correctly. Check which instructions apply now and which depend on a later test or appointment.

Language arrangements do not determine eligibility, referral requirements or price. Check those separately with the service. Visitors can consult 1177's guidance about care for people from another country rather than assuming the rules for residents apply to them.

This is general information about communication in healthcare, not an assessment of symptoms or a recommendation of a particular provider.
